THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

A minimum payment is the smallest required payment shown on a statement. Paying only the minimum can keep a balance outstanding longer and increase total interest. New purchases can extend repayment further.

KEY VOCABULARY

Minimum payment
Smallest payment required for the statement period.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Use the repayment information on your statement to compare minimum-only payments with a larger affordable payment.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Assuming the minimum is a plan to repay quickly.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Pay at least the required amount on time; consider more when your budget allows.
