THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Utilization compares reported revolving balances with credit limits. Both individual accounts and overall usage can matter. Lower reported usage generally helps, but no single percentage guarantees a score outcome.

KEY VOCABULARY

Utilization
Reported balance divided by available credit limit.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A reported balance of $200 on a $1,000 limit is 20% utilization. The reported balance may differ from what you see today.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Carrying interest-bearing debt to build a score.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

You do not need to pay interest to establish credit history.
