THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE
Interest is a cost of borrowing. APR expresses an annualized rate, but fees, compounding and grace-period terms affect actual cost. Credit card cash advances can have different rules from purchases.
KEY VOCABULARY
- APR
- Annual percentage rate.
- Grace period
- A period when eligible purchases may avoid interest if conditions are met.
A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A $1,000 balance at an illustrative 24% APR produces roughly $20 interest in a simple one-month approximation; actual daily calculations vary.
A COMMON MISTAKE
Looking only at the monthly payment rather than total borrowing cost.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
Read the rate, fees and repayment terms together.
