THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Credit mix refers to the kinds of credit accounts in a report, such as revolving cards and installment loans. It is one factor in some score models. Your ability to afford an account matters more than adding variety.

KEY VOCABULARY

Installment loan
Borrowing repaid through scheduled payments.
Revolving credit
Credit that can be reused within a limit.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A person with only a credit card does not need to take out an unnecessary car loan just to diversify.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Taking on debt solely to change a score factor.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Borrow for a considered need, with an affordable repayment plan.
