THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

A credit report is a record of reported borrowing and repayment activity. It may include accounts, balances, payment history, inquiries and collections. Reports from different bureaus may differ. A report and a score are related but distinct.

KEY VOCABULARY

Credit bureau
A company that gathers credit information.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Check your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. If an account is unfamiliar, document the issue and follow the bureau’s dispute process.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Paying someone who promises to remove accurate negative information.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Review your own reports and dispute information you believe is inaccurate.
