THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Risk management starts by accepting that any trade can lose. Define the amount you can afford to lose, position size, invalidation point and total exposure before entering. Stop orders may execute at worse prices in fast markets.

KEY VOCABULARY

Position size
Amount of exposure.
Slippage
Difference between intended and executed price.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

In a hypothetical demo account of $1,000, a planned $5 risk is 0.5%. This illustrates arithmetic, not a recommended risk level or a guaranteed loss limit.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Increasing size to recover losses or assuming a stop eliminates all risk.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

A written plan reduces improvisation; it cannot remove market risk.
