THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Forex is the exchange of one currency for another. Banks, businesses and individuals exchange currencies for many reasons; speculation is only one of them. Retail forex can involve leveraged products and substantial losses.

KEY VOCABULARY

Forex
Foreign exchange: converting one currency into another.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A US business paying a supplier in euros needs to exchange dollars for euros. A speculative trader instead tries to benefit from a change in the exchange rate.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Treating currency trading like a predictable source of income.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Start by understanding the market and its risks before placing any trade.
