THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Revenue is money earned from sales before expenses. Profit is what remains after applicable costs. Gross and net profit describe different levels of expense deduction; neither is automatically the same as cash in the bank.

KEY VOCABULARY

Revenue
Sales before expenses.
Profit
Revenue remaining after the relevant expenses.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A hypothetical $250 sale with $60 direct costs leaves $190 gross profit before overhead, taxes and any other expenses. This is an example, not a business result.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Calling all money received personal spending money.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Track costs and obligations before deciding what you can take home.
