THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

A budget is a practical plan for income, expenses and reserves. Separate fixed and variable costs and revisit assumptions as you learn. Keep business records separate from personal spending where possible.

KEY VOCABULARY

Fixed cost
A cost that stays relatively stable over a period.
Variable cost
A cost that changes with activity.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

List recurring software, per-job costs and expected tax reserves, then compare the plan with actual transactions each month.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Building a budget that assumes every month matches the best month.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Use conservative assumptions and review the gap between plan and reality.
