THE IDEA, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Funding can come from savings, customer revenue, suitable grants, investors or borrowing. Each has tradeoffs. Debt is not required to become an entrepreneur, and financing does not replace a viable offer or affordable repayment plan.

KEY VOCABULARY

Bootstrapping
Building with available resources and operating revenue.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A small service can start with tools already owned and reinvest early revenue. Another business may need a different approach based on real costs.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Treating access to funding as proof the business is profitable.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Match funding choices to realistic needs, costs and obligations.
